The possibility of Lionel Messi following in Diego Maradona’s footsteps has been brought up as the 2026 World Cup approaches. At 39 years old, Messi could potentially play in the tournament for the second time in his career, this time on American soil. He recently teased the idea of ending his international career with a post on Instagram where he wore the full 1994 Argentina kit, complete with the number 10. It would not be surprising if Messi chose to compete in the tournament, as he has previously come out of retirement to eventually win the World Cup and is currently performing well in the MLS.
